According to tradition, it was founded in 1579 CE (Tensho 7) by Nichicho. In 1589 CE (Tensho 17), it is said that Lady Yodo built the main hall using leftover materials from the construction of Osaka Castle to pray for the long military fortune of her son, Toyotomi Hideyori. After a period of decline during the Meiji era, war damage, and relocation due to road expansion, the current modern main hall was built in 1963.
