It is said to have been founded in the 6th year of Empress Suiko's reign (594 CE) by Prince Shotoku in Miyada-go, Yamato Province, and the principal image is believed to have been carved by Prince Shotoku himself. During the Heian period, by imperial decree of Emperor Go-Sanjo, it became a place of practice for the protection of the state. In the first year of the Bunmei era (1366 CE), it was relocated to Kyoto by order of Emperor Go-Koygon. Although it was destroyed by fire during the Onin War and the Tenmei Great Fire, it has been rebuilt.
