In 794 CE (Enryaku 13), during the relocation of the capital to Heian-kyo, Daikun was invited from the foot of Kasuga Hill in Nara as one of the Eight General Deities to guard the Tenmon Gate of the Imperial Palace, and the Daikun-do hall was constructed. During the Edo period, the shrine syncretized with Susanoo-no-Mikoto (also known as Ushitora Tenno) and was renamed Daikun-yahashin-gu. Amidst the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the Meiji era, the official enshrined deities were changed to Susanoo-no-Mikoto and his eight child deities, resulting in the current shrine name.
