享徳元年(1452)に榮休上人によって上成の地に建立され、承応年間(1652~1655)に現在の場所へ移転した。明治4年には西学教導所が置かれ、明治40年には大正天皇の山陰道行啓の際に東郷平八郎大将の宿泊所となった。
