According to temple records, it was founded in 722 CE by the monk Kibi no Makibi (Kibi). It was revived during the Muromachi period by Kando, an illegitimate son of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. It was later revived again during the Eiroku era (1394-1428 CE) by Takeda Nobunari, who dedicated a copy of the Dairoku (Tripitaka) to the temple, giving rise to its current name.
