Founded in 1624 CE (Kan'ei 1) by the Shugendo practitioner Okai of Yudomazan. The temple was the source of the Meiwadai Fire, which prevented it from receiving permission for reconstruction. It was later rebuilt in 1848 CE (Kaye 1) with the patronage of Shimazu Narinori, the lord of the Satsuma Domain. During the Meiji era, the adjacent Myooin temple was merged into Daizenji.
