Traditionally founded in 771 CE (Hoki 2) by the preceptor Shitaku, it was originally named Jitsuenji. In 1585 CE (Tensho 13), Hoshi Shu-ei, the mother of Tsutsui Shunkei, obtained imperial permission from Emperor Go-Yozei to invite Elder Senzo from Toji Temple, renaming the temple Denshoji and re-establishing it. Since then, it has served as the family temple of the Tsutsui clan.
