History

According to shrine tradition, in 1530 CE (Kyoroku 3), the founding monk of Eifuku-ji Temple, So-ten, invited the deity Toyuke-Ookami from Ise Gekujin (the Outer Shrine of Ise) to serve as the guardian deity of the temple grounds. During a land survey in 1639 CE (Kan'ei 16), it became the guardian deity of the village of Eifuku-ji. After the Meiji Restoration, it separated from Eifuku-ji Temple. In 1878 CE (Meiji 11), the shrine buildings were rebuilt facing west to protect the entire town. In 1907 CE (Meiji 40), Kitano Shrine was merged into it.

What visitors say

Although modest in size, the shrine grounds are meticulously maintained and pleasant. The administrative office is accessible only via an intercom, and Goshuin (shrine seal stamps) are available only as pre-written copies. The surrounding area features several historical temples and shrines, making it a good idea to visit them together.
