It is said that Kukai, who came on a pilgrimage during the Kounin era (810-824 CE), performed a Goma (fire ritual) to pray for safe passage at sea. On the day his vow was fulfilled, a sacred image of Amida Nyorai appeared on the sea, which he brought to the summit to build a hall and establish the temple. Later, during the time of Minamoto no Yoriyoshi, Ishizumi Hachimangu (Ishizumi Hachiman Grand Shrine) was constructed. After surviving the wars of the medieval period, the temple was renamed Eifukuji in the 4th year of Kansei (1792 CE). Due to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the early Meiji period, the shrine and temple became independent. Today, it serves as the 57th station of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage.
