The temple's origins trace back to 1602 CE (Keicho 7), when Tanaka Yoshimasa appointed his vassal Tanaka Saba-yu as the castle's deputy governor. Saba-yu established a Zen Buddhist temple to serve as a repository for memorial tablets. In 1653 CE (Joyo 2), the temple temporarily became unoccupied following the death of the second abbot, Ryozan. Subsequently, it was managed by the abbot of Shojima Houn-ji.
