According to tradition, in 540 CE (Kei 1), a monk from Liang named Seigan established a hermitage. Later, in 634 CE (Sho 6), a monk named Eiryou named the temple Eiryouji. There is also a tradition that in 808 CE (Doto 3), Sakanoue no Tamamaru founded the temple following the will of Kukai. At one point, it was a large complex with 36 halls, but currently only the Niomon (Lion Gate), the main hall, and the Kannon Hall remain.
