A Shingon Hyossan-ha sect temple located in Adachi Ward, Tokyo, and also the 88th station of the New Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. It is also known as a haiku temple and a frog temple.
History
The temple was founded during the Tenki era (1053-1058 CE). According to tradition, during the First Chijimi War, the army of Minamoto no Yoriyoshi and his son Yoshitomo prayed for victory and succeeded in winning the battle. The mountain name 'Fanshōzan' (Banner Victory Mountain) was chosen because the Minamoto clan's banner prevailed, the temple name 'Jōju-in' (Achievement Court) was given because the prayer was fulfilled, and the name 'Endenji' (Scorching Sun Temple) was adopted due to the consecutive hot weather. It also served as the bettō (head temple) of the neighboring Rokugatsu Hachiman Shrine, which was founded at the same time.
