Established to pray for the soul of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, it served as the late-life residence of his legal wife, Kitano Ba (Kōdai-in). In 1632 CE (Kan'ei 9), it was renamed Endoin as a sub-temple of Kōdai-ji by Kinoshita Toshihisa, and subsequently became the family temple of the Kinoshita clan.
