History
Legend holds that the temple was founded during the Tenpyo era when the monk Gyoji, inspired by a vision from an old man, carved four Buddhas and one bodhisattva and established a temple to enshrine them by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu. Originally a Hosso-shu (Hossu) temple, it was converted to the Tendai-shu sect during the reign of Emperor Kammu. In 1678 CE (Enpo 6), the Jodo-shu monk Koyu Enku rebuilt the temple with the support of Tada Ujisuke.
