According to tradition, in the first year of Tenpyo Shoho (749 CE), Gyoki carved the principal image of Amida Nyorai, along with the attendant deities Kannon Bosatsu (Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva) and Seishi Bosatsu (Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva), and founded the temple under an imperial edict from Emperor Shomu. The temple fell into ruin due to warfare from the Kamakura period onward and was relocated to its current site during the Genwa era (1615–1624 CE). In the 10th year of Kan'ei (1633 CE), Suga Senzai Shigehisa used his personal funds to revive the temple, which then became a direct sub-temple of Ninna-ji.
