In 1181 CE, it was designated as the Sosha (head shrine) of Harima Province. When Toyotomi Hideyoshi constructed Himeji Castle in 1581 CE, the shrine was moved to its present site. Although it was destroyed during the air raid on Himeji in 1945, it was rebuilt shortly after the war.
