Founded in 1254 CE (Kencho 6) in the present-day Enseiji-machi area of Yamaguchi City, it served as a prayer site for the Ouchi clan. Around 1594 CE (Keicho 9), it was relocated to the current Hagi City site alongside the construction of Hagi Castle, becoming a prayer site for the Mori clan. Following the 1870 CE (Meiji 3) separation of Shinto and Buddhism, it merged with the former Hokoin temple at the current location and moved to its present site.
