Five-Story Pagoda
京都市伏見区醍醐東大路町22
A temple registered as a World Heritage site, located in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City. It is the head temple of the Daigo branch of the Shingon sect and houses national treasure structures such as the Five-Story Pagoda and the Golden Hall (Kondo).
History
Founded in the early Heian period by the monk Seppo, who enshrined statues of Jizō and other deities at Upper Daigo. In 908 CE (Engi 7), the Yakushi Hall (Medicine Buddha Hall) was constructed by imperial decree of Emperor Daigo. Subsequently, under Emperor Murakami and Fujiwara Atuko, large-scale renovation projects were carried out, including the construction of the Five-Story Pagoda. The temple established a strong economic foundation as the family temple of the Minamoto clan and later became a hub for producing distinguished monks.
