The shrine originated as a Benzaiten shrine established by Ryu Sen, the founder of Enmeiji Temple. It was rebuilt in 1634 CE (Kaneie 11) as the chief guardian shrine of the Fuchi village. Following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in 1868 CE (Meiji 1), the enshrined deities were changed to the Munakata Three Goddesses, and the shrine was renamed Fuchi Shrine. It was promoted to a Prefectural Shrine in 1943 CE (Shōwa 18). Although it collapsed due to the atomic bomb, it was rebuilt in 1960 CE (Shōwa 35).
