It is said that the shrine's name originates from Nichiren Shonin inviting Fuji Sen'gen during the Bun'ō era. In the first year of the Genki era, Ashida Emon constructed the shrine buildings. During the Edo period, the buildings were renovated in the first year of the Bunka era and the seventh year of the Ansei era. In the third year of the Meiji era, the shrine was renamed Tsunoka Shrine, but it reverted to its current name, Fuji Asama Shrine, in the 36th year of the Meiji era.
