Founded in 935 CE (Johei 5) through a branch enshrinement from Ishizuki Hachimangu to protect the Kyushu region. From the Kamakura period onward, it received reverence from successive feudal lords and was designated as the guardian shrine of Kumamoto Castle during the Edo period. Although the shrine buildings were destroyed in the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877 (Meiji 10), the shrine was relocated to its current site and rebuilt.
