Tokugawa Ieyasu ordered that the area be named "Fukagawa" after Hachirōemon's surname, which became the origin of the place name. Due to the Meiji-era policy of separating Shinto and Buddhism, the shrine's former connection to Izenyō-ji, its previous head temple (bettōji), was severed.
