History
This Soto sect temple was founded by Anchu in either 1491 or 1541. It came to be called 'Akamon-ji' due to the existence of a vermilion-painted gate donated by Tokugawa Iemitsu as a memorial service for his father. The current red gate is the third generation, built to replace previous gates that were destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake and the Tokyo Air Raids.
