〒969-7201 福島県河沼郡柳津町柳津寺家町甲176

4.1(1862)

A temple of the Rinzai sect, Myoshinji branch, located in Yanagita Town, Fukushima Prefecture. It is counted as one of the Three Great Kuzujou (Kongo Yozan Bosatsu) in Japan. Also known as Fukuman Kuzujou, it holds the Nanika Dou Hadamai (Seven-Day Hall Naked Pilgrimage) every year on January 7.

History

The temple is said to have begun when Tokuitsu built the Kuzujou Hall in 807 CE (Doutou 2) to enshrine a Kuzujou Bosatsu statue crafted by Kukai. Enzouji was subsequently established as the head temple. During the Northern and Southern Courts period, it was converted to the Rinzai sect. In the Edo period, it briefly belonged to the Shingon sect but returned to the Rinzai sect in 1627. The Oku-no-in Benten-do (Inner Sanctuary Benten Hall) was built during the Muromachi period and is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

Located on a cliff, the main hall offers a stunning panoramic view of the Shimanto River. The temple grounds are spacious, with stairs for climbing from the bottom and a parking lot at the top.
