Founded in 1492 by the monk Son'yu, it was later established as a Besshoji (subordinate temple) of Oji Gongen by the local head Okano Fusatsune. However, it declined after the Meiji Restoration, eventually burning down completely and entering a period without a resident priest. It was revived in the 1930s, and the current main hall was rebuilt in 1970.
