Founded in 733 CE (Tenpyo 5) during the Nara period by Shonin Manko as a Hosso sect temple. It converted to the Tendai sect in 859 CE during the Heian period. During the Edo period, the temple lost many of its buildings due to repeated fires, but the current main hall was rebuilt in the Taisho period.
