According to tradition, the shrine's origins date back to the 40th year of Emperor Keikō's reign, when Prince Yamato Takeru prayed for the successful pacification of the eastern provinces during his eastern expedition. Later, a Shrine of the Sun (Shinmeisha) was established to protect the imperial granary (mikuji) donated to Ise Jingu. As the shrine declined, it was merged into Ichihibisha Shrine. The shrine buildings were destroyed by fire during the Boshin War of the Meiji Restoration, but the main hall (honden) and worship hall (haiden) were rebuilt in the Meiji era.
