Funabura Shrine

Located in Matsubara City, Osaka Prefecture, this shrine enshrines the general Sando (local tutelary deity) of the seven villages of Funabura Gō (Funabura district). It also served as the Chinjusa (guardian shrine) of Funabura-ji Temple.

The exact date of its founding is unknown, but its origin is said to stem from the ritual summoning of Hayatsusanonokami (a deity) from Amamikuzo Shrine, where a white cloth was spread out to receive the deity. The shrine was named 'Funabura' (Cloth Endurance) in reference to this event. It was originally enshrined as the Chinjusa of Funabura-ji Temple but became an independent shrine in 1873 (Meiji 6) following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism.
