Founded in the first year of the Shoki era (724 CE) during the Nara period by the monk Giki, it is said to enshrine a statue of Kannon (Avalokiteshvara) created by Prince Shotoku. The temple was burned down during the Sengoku period by Takeda Shingen but was later rebuilt by Mochizuki Saemon-no-Suke Nobumasa. In the late Edo period, Makiya Yasuaki restored most of the current buildings.
