The shrine's origins date back to ancient times when the ancient Ryukyuan Shinto faith was worshipped in the caves of Futenma-gu. It is said that Kumano Gongen was jointly enshrined in the mid-15th century. As one of the Ryukyu Hachasha, its worship spread during the early modern period, syncretizing with Kumano faith, Kannon (Avalokitesvara) devotion, and spiritual stone beliefs. After the kami (deities) were evacuated during the Battle of Okinawa, the grounds were returned by the US military in 1949, and reconstruction of the main hall and other structures began in 1953.
