In 1694 CE (Genroku 7), Zen Master Bansan Dōhaku, the 27th abbot of Daijō-ji in the Sōtō Zen school, took residence and restored the temple, converting it to the Sōtō Zen tradition. Although it lost many branch temples during the Haibutsu Kishaku (destruction of Buddhism) movement following the Meiji Restoration, it continues to exist today as a Sōtō Zen temple.
