The date of founding is unknown, but records state that it was granted a priestly rank in 795 CE (Enryaku 14). Following a flood in 1663 CE (Kanbun 3), the main hall was moved to its current location on a high ground in 1710 CE (Hōei 7), and the shrine became known as Genyushin Shrine. Later, Benten Tenuga Shrine was merged into it, and the name was changed to Bensen Ten Shrine.
