Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion Temple)

A Rinzai sect temple of the Shokoku-ji branch located in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, officially named Tōzan Jishō-ji. It was constructed in 1482 CE (Bunmei 14) as the mountain villa 'Tōzan-dono' by Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the eighth shogun of the Muromachi shogunate. After Yoshimasa's death, it became a Rinzai temple and was named Jishō-ji after his posthumous name, 'Jishō-in.' The principal image is Shaka Nyorai (the Buddha Shakyamuni). The Kannon-dō (Silver Pavilion), built in 1489 CE (Chōkyō 3), is a National Treasure and a representative example of Muromachi-era tower architecture, serving as a counterpart to the Kinkaku (Kinkaku-ji Shariden). The Tōkyū-dō within the grounds is designated as a National Treasure as the oldest extant shoin-zukuri (study hall style) building and had a significant influence on later shoin-zukuri and tea house architecture. As a mountain villa reflecting the essence of Tōzan culture through its simple and austere beauty, it is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under 'Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.'
History

Visitors can stroll through the grounds while enjoying beautiful landscapes, including the Gin-sa-ten (Silver Sand Beach) formed with white sand, the Kōgetsu-dai (Moon-viewing Terrace), and moss gardens. The approach path continuing from the Philosopher's Path is lined with shops, and the view from the top of the stairs is refreshing, allowing for a peaceful time.
