The shrine's origins are said to stem from Minamoto no Yoshitaka, who, during his campaign to subdue the Oshu region, planted a ginkgo branch that had drifted down a river onto a hill and offered prayers there. After the pacification of Oshu, he returned and, grateful to find the ginkgo tree flourishing, dedicated a sword and enshrined Hachiman.
