The shrine originated as Gobo Zen Shrine within the grounds of Koguyama Shingo-ji Temple, founded by the Wakakusa clan. In 1851 (Kaei 4), Wakakusa no Kimimaro was granted the divine title of Gobo Daimyojin and the rank of Sho-i-i. In 1886 (Meiji 19), the shrine was relocated to its current site. In 1915 (Taisho 4), Wakakusa no Hirohime was jointly enshrined. Today, it is listed as a special shrine under the Association of Shinto Shrines.
