Founded in 1057 CE (Tenki 5) by Fujiwara Yasumoto under an imperial edict from Emperor Gosuizen, it eventually became the inner sanctuary of Onjo-ji. The temple fell into ruin during the Onin War but was restored in 1641 CE (Kan'ei 18) by the wealthy merchant Tsunenobu. The temple name was confirmed by Prince Kaku-shin, a high priest of Onjo-ji. In 1928, the temple relocated to its current site east of Onjo-ji, and in 1958, a group of stone statues collected and restored from Otodoyama was moved into the temple grounds.
