It was relocated to its current site and rebuilt in the second year of the Kenkyu era (1191 CE) by Kawakami Mochikiyoshi. The temple flourished as a dojo for nembutsu (recitation of the Buddha's name) after inviting the monk Honen Shonin. During the reign of Emperor Go-Kachikawa, it was renamed Seijaku-zan Den-in-in Gokuraku-ji.
