It is said to have been founded by Giki during the Nara period. In 815 CE (Kōnin 6), it is said that Kūkai, while reciting the Amitabha Sutra, perceived the form of Amitabha Buddha. The temple burned down in 1582 CE (Tenshō 10) but was rebuilt in 1659 CE (Manji 2) by Hachisuka Mitsutaka.
