History
According to shrine tradition, the shrine originated when a prince of Emperor Suinin enshrined the war deity Kotoshironushi-no-Mikoto. It was established as the Sosa of Ueno Province during the mid-to-late Heian period, when provincial governors built a head shrine near the provincial government office. After burning down in 1566 CE (Eiroku 9), it was rebuilt on its current site during the Genki era (1570–1573 CE). A major repair was carried out in 1616 CE (Genna 2) by Akimoto Yasutomo.
