History
The shrine is said to have been founded in 1171 CE (Jōan 1). From the medieval period onward, it served as the head shrine (sōsha) of the Yanabe Estate in the ancient province of Kazusa. In 1180 CE (Jōji 4), Minamoto no Yoritomo is said to have prayed here for long-lasting military success. During the Tenshō era, the shrine buildings were constructed with financial support from the Kiso clan. The current main hall (honden) was rebuilt in 1711 CE (Shōtoku 1) and is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Chiba Prefecture.
