Gosho Shrine

Amaterasu Omikami, Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto, Kamowakeikazuchi-no-Okami, Kanayamahiko-no-Kami, Takeminakata-no-Kami

It is said that En no Gyokyu (Yakuyoko) conducted ascetic practices here at the end of the 7th century, founding the site. Later, Minamoto no Yoriyoshi transferred five sacred spirits to this location for joint worship, establishing the deity as Asahi-yama Gosho Daimyojin. Since ancient times, the Shugendo sect known as Tosho-in served as the head priests (betto) managing the rituals. Although affected by the separation of Shinto and Buddhism during the Meiji period, the role of the chief priest was inherited through generations. In the medieval period, it served as a base for Asahi Shugendo, but declined due to power struggles with the Haguro Shugendo sect and persecution by the Hojo clan.
