The shrine is said to have originated in the 3rd year of Tenki (1165 CE, late Heian period) when Minamoto no Yoriyoshi invited the deity of Kumano Shrine to pray for victory in battle. Later, Minamoto no Yoritomo relocated and constructed the shrine at its current location. It was revered as a guardian deity by the Shingu clan, and many sacred objects were donated. However, it declined due to wars and earthquakes in the late 16th century, and the worship hall (Nagadoko) was rebuilt in the 19th year of Keicho (1614 CE). It is currently maintained and managed by a preservation association.
