A temple of the Myoshin-ji branch of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, enshrining Shaka Nyorai (the Buddha) as its principal image. It is also the first station of the Masuda Saigoku 33 Sacred Sites pilgrimage. It is known by the nickname "Momiji-ji" (Maple Temple) as a famous spot for autumn foliage.

It is said to have been founded by Gyoki, who enshrined Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha). It was later renamed Kanbayama Kongou-ji. During the Muromachi period, Keidou Gennetsu became the abbot, and the temple was transferred to the Myoshin-ji branch of the Rinzai school. After the death of Kanamori Nagachika, it was renamed to its current name, Youchuzan Gyoryu-ji. The current complex, rebuilt in the 11th year of the Hōreki era (1761 CE), contains the remains of the lord of Hida Takayama Domain and the tomb of Kato Somo.
