In the first year of the Genwa era (1615 CE), it was reconstructed by Kataura Kojuro, the lord of Shiogama Castle, as a place of prayer for long-lasting military success and the safety of the castle interior. It was designated as a Village Shrine in the fifth year of the Meiji era (1872 CE) and as a Koshin-sha (a shrine designated to offer tribute to the Imperial Court) in the thirteenth year of the Taisho era (1924 CE).
