During the Nara period, Emperor Shomu enshrined Hoori-no-Mikoto and others here, designating it as the single Hachiman shrine for the province. Although the shrine buildings were destroyed by war during the Sengoku period, they were restored in 1543 CE (Tenbun 12). In the Meiji era, the shrine was classified as a Kosha (prefectural shrine).
