Initially located at Matsuyama, the shrine was moved inside the castle when Ashikaga Yoshii constructed Nishijo Castle (Nishio Castle). Since the mid-Edo period, the portable shrine (mikoshi) of the Ibumi Shrine's summer Gion Festival has been paraded to this shrine.
