It is said that the shrine originated about 800 years ago during the Kamakura period, when the local lord, Gyoho Yorijiro, enshrined Gozu Tenno (the Heavenly King of the Ox-Head). Following the Separation of Shinto and Buddhism edict in 1868 (Meiji 1), the Gozu Tenno Shrine within the grounds of Jisei-in Temple became independent as Yakumo Shrine. In 1907 (Meiji 40), it was renamed Hada Shrine.
