Tradition holds that the shrine was founded on April 26, 1185 CE (Bunji 1). The shrine buildings were rebuilt on July 21, 1835 CE (Tenpo 6), at which time Tenmangu was merged into this shrine and it was renamed Hakusan Shrine. On September 24, 1941 CE (Showa 16), it was designated as a shrine eligible to receive offerings of food and cloth from the Imperial Household.
