The shrine originated when monks carried a mikoshi (portable shrine) during a strong protest in the first year of Jicho (1177 CE). The residents established a shrine at the spot where the mikoshi became immovable and was left behind. It gained fame as the 'deity for toothache' after it cured the toothache of Emperor Gosakuramachi during the Edo period. Although the shrine was completely destroyed by the Tenmei Great Fire and the fires of the Kinmon Incident, it was later rebuilt.
