A Shingon Buddhist temple of the Hozan school located on the mid-slope of Awaji-ga-Touge in Matsuyama City. It is also the 50th station of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage.
History
Founded by Giki during the Tenpyou Shohou era, the temple was later renamed Higashiyama Han'udoji after Kukai practiced asceticism there. It was revived by Minamoto no Yoriyoshi and reached its peak of prosperity when it enshrined Kannon of Joy (Kangiten), the personal devotional Buddha of Tokugawa Iemitsu.
